Sesalie Johnson
Seaslie Johnson enters her third season at Legacy. Johnson was named the head coach of the Titans’ girls basketball team June 2020. She
replaced Elizabeth Galloway- McQuitter, who retired after a long, successful
coaching career at both the collegiate and high school levels.
Johnson has been a winner not only in
basketball, but also in the positive impact she has had on the children,
teenagers and young adults she has helped shape throughout her career.
The Houston native attended Westfield High
School, where she helped lead the Mustangs to the Class 5A state championship
in 2004. Johnson went on to earn a full scholarship at Coppin State and was a
four-year letter winner for the Eagles from 2007-2010.
Johnson was a member of Coppin State’s 2007
team that won its first-round game in the Women’s National Invitation
Tournament, marking the Eagles’ first postseason victory in program history. In
2008, Coppin State won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship to earn
an automatic berth in the NCAA championship tournament.
Since her graduation from Coppin State in 2010
with a degree in business, Johnson has actively been leading and training
student-athletes in basketball. Following her graduation, she was named the
girls varsity head coach at Coppin Academy, where she recruited local
student-athletes in the Baltimore area, coordinated all practices, and coached the
team to an above .500 winning percentage for the first time in years.
In addition, Golden Eagles standout Dejhonae
Cannady surpassed the 1,000-career points milestone during Johnson’s tenure and
received a full scholarship to Chesapeake College.
Upon
her return to Houston, Johnson trained Christopher Hagan, who played
professional basketball overseas for four years. Johnson also served as the girls’
varsity head coach at YES Prep Southwest during the 2013-2014 basketball
season. In 2015, Johnson along with others founded Future Leaders of
Basketball, a non-profit organization with a mission to maximize
student-athletes’ potential on and off the court.
Johnson
has an infectious passion for the game of basketball and prides herself in
giving back to younger student-athletes what the game of basketball has given
her. She believes the sport is a microcosm of life and is a steppingstone to
becoming a future leader.
